A group of eight parents recently graduated Associated and JP Family Engagement Network's joint Positive Parenting Workshop, an eight-week series that focuses on important parenting topics such as: understanding temperament and development, positive discipline, establishing routines, knowing your child, and school success.
The graduation honored the parents and facilitator Pam Bailey from Families First. "There's a lot of programs for before the child is born, but not a lot for when they're really in the parenting stages," said Bailey. "Providing family and parent workshops is important. Day-to-day life is stressful, and workshops provide a place for parents to come together and talk about life."
At the graduation, Lauren Morse, Associated's Outreach and Partnerships Coordinator for Jamaica Plain, praised each participating parent in the workshop, as well as the Parent Partners, a small group of parents committed to parent outreach for the workshop. "They do it because they love it, because they own this work," said Morse. Associated highlighted the Parent Partners' work last summer for their outstanding community engagement work.
Stephanie Miller, parent of a young boy, looked forward to coming every week. "It's something I'm really happy I chose to do," said Miller. "It was the best parenting group I'd ever done."
Morse praised Ms. Bailey's accessibility and her willingness to share her own struggles as a parent. "That mutual support was so powerful," said Morse. Ms. Bailey participated in a similar workshop as a young parent herself. "I did this twenty-six years ago and I'm very grateful I was able to raise three African-American men," said Bailey. "The workshops provided me a framework for how they develop and how they build their skillset."
The Positive Parenting Workshop was such a success that Associated and JP Family Engagement Network plan to offer the workshop again in the future. In the meantime, the group of graduates and a few other parents have continued to meet with Pam Bailey in a weekly support group.
